Feeling Overwhelmed? You’re in the Right Place.

If you landed on this page, you might be feeling a bit lost. Maybe you clicked through our site, saw all the different therapy types, and thought: “How am I supposed to know what I need?”
Take a breath. You do not need to figure it all out before reaching out.

Why Our Site Has So Much Information
Center for Mindful Therapy is a collective of over 100 Associate Marriage and Family Therapists at any given time. Our therapists are pre-licensed clinicians completing their supervised practice hours, which means our community is always evolving. As therapists become fully licensed and move on, new graduates join us.
This rotating community means we offer an unusually wide range of therapeutic approaches, specialties, and perspectives. That diversity is a strength, but we know it can feel overwhelming when you are just trying to find help.
Here is the good news: you do not need to understand all of it.
Two Types of Therapy Seekers (Both Are Welcome)
You are looking for therapy in the San Francisco Bay Area or throughout California, maybe in person or maybe via telehealth. What do you do now? Some people like to explore options on their own and some want help picking a therapist. Show up however you are!
The Researcher
Some people want to understand their options by reading a lot about them first. If that is you, our site has plenty to explore, as you can see in the dropdown menus at the top of the site:
How We Help dropdown menus cover therapeutic approaches organized by category including different somatic, mindfulness, cognitive, and relational approaches.
What We Help covers the concerns and challenges people bring to therapy.
Who We Help discusses individual, family, and group therapy
Read as much or as little as you want. There is no test.
The “Just Help Me Find Someone” Person
Other people find all that information exhausting. If reading about therapy modalities makes your eyes glaze over, skip it entirely. Most of our therapists practice multiple approaches and will tailor their work to what you need.
Your simplest options:
- Browse our Therapist Directory and see who feels like a good match based on their photo, bio, and specialties
- Contact us and we will help match you with someone
That is it. You do not need to know the difference between CBT and DBT or whether you need somatic therapy. Your therapist will figure that out with you.
You Do Not Need a “Reason” for Therapy
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons:
Some have a specific focus:
- “I am struggling with anxiety”
- “My relationship is in trouble”
- “I experienced trauma and need help processing it”
Others have several things going on:
- “Work stress, relationship issues, and I think maybe some depression?”
- “I am not sure where to start but nothing feels right”
Some are not sure why they are there:
- “I just feel stuck”
- “Something needs to change but I cannot name it”
- “Someone suggested I try therapy”
All of these are valid reasons to start. You do not need to have your story figured out before your first session. Part of therapy is discovering what you actually need to work on.
Your Three Paths Forward
Path 1: Browse and Choose
Visit our Therapist Directory. Read through profiles. Pay attention to who catches your attention, whose words resonate, whose face feels trustworthy. Your intuition matters here.
Filter by:
- Specialty areas
- Therapeutic approaches (if you have preferences)
- Demographics or identities (if that matters to you)
When someone feels like a potential fit, reach out directly through their profile.
Path 2: Let Us Help Match You
Contact us or call (415) 766-0276. Tell us a bit about what you are looking for, and we will suggest therapists who might be a good fit. This is especially helpful if:
- You feel overwhelmed by choices
- You have specific needs and want guidance
- You are not sure what you are looking for
Path 3: Learn More First
If you want to understand your options before deciding:
- Explore our How We Help pages to learn about different therapeutic approaches
- Read our What We Help pages to see how therapy addresses specific challenges
- Browse our blog for articles on mental health topics
Then circle back to Path 1 or 2 when you are ready.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if I pick the wrong therapist?
A: It happens, and it is okay. The therapeutic relationship matters more than any specific technique, and sometimes the fit is not right. If after a few sessions you feel it is not working, you can switch to another therapist within our collective or ask us for a different recommendation. Finding the right match sometimes takes a try or two.
Q: How do I know what kind of therapy I need?
A: You do not need to know. Seriously. That is your therapist’s job to figure out with you. They will ask questions, learn about your situation, and draw on their training to determine what approaches might help. If they think a different modality or specialist would serve you better, they will tell you.
Q: What if I am not sure therapy is right for me?
A: Most therapists offer an initial session where you can get a feel for the process and ask questions. You are not committing to months of treatment by scheduling one appointment. Try it and see how it feels.
Q: Is telehealth an option?
A: Yes. Most of our therapists offer video sessions, which means you can access care from anywhere in California. Some therapists also offer in person sessions at various locations throughout the Bay Area. Availability varies by therapist.
Still Feeling Stuck?
That is okay. Sometimes the hardest part of therapy is starting. If this page still feels like too much, here is the absolute simplest thing you can do:
Say: “I am looking for a therapist but I am not sure where to start.”
We will take it from there.
